Colleagues in the Spotlight

May 3rd, 2011 | Posted By Cassie Boorn

Here at DeVries we have marathon runners, Gluten-Free advocates, non-profit supporters and a large range of talented people with a many different interests, skills, and hobbies.

Every once in a while it is these passions and interests that brings one of our colleagues into the spotlight. We are so proud of Account Executive Lisa Sepulveda for being recognized as the Hispanic Public Relations Association member of the month!

Lisa was spotlighted in the monthly newsletter alongside Yadhira De Leon of the Autry National Center.  In celebration we wanted to share a short interview about her role and the part of being a bilingual PR professional that excites her most:

What do you enjoy about PR in your line of work?
As a bilingual PR professional, I believe the public relations industry continues to evolve and foster remarkable opportunities within the Hispanic market. Ranging from consumer to non-profit to retail, I have assisted in the development and implementation of several multicultural campaigns. My current role at DeVries focuses on brand communications, social media engagement, product launches and consumer relations. It’s very exciting to connect with influential leaders of the Hispanic community through my work. Most importantly, I am proud to contribute to the next generation of Latina influencers.

What is something not many people know about you?
I am 26 years old, first generation Colombian-American and graduated from Loyola College in Maryland. Plus I’m a world traveler – including Brazil, Chile, Finland, Italy, Spain, Greece and Australia.

What is the best advice you have ever received in your professional career?

I have been fortunate to come across wonderful mentors who always encouraged me to never give up and stay focused. My parents have also served as strong role models and instilled in me a tremendous work ethic. Both have given me a great deal of confidence and helped me grow into a successful individual.

What advice can you provide to incoming generation of Hispanic PR professionals?

Get involved! It’s crucial for the next wave of Hispanic PR professionals to join forces and empower the Latino community. Our industry today offers a great number of valuable resources that can help jumpstart your career. I strongly urge the incoming generation to take advantage of such wonderful opportunities. HPRA is a great example – after all, it’s how I got here today.

On Our Radar.

April 29th, 2011 | Posted By Cassie Boorn

Each Friday we work hard to bring together the hottest topics in the world of PR, media, marketing, and pop culture. The best finds on the Web are contributed by different members of the agency and brought together to create a list of must-see topics. This week’s links were brought to you by Managing Director Meryl Cooper, Account Coordinator Reene Severino and myself.

If you have been paying any attention in the past few months than you know this morning was the Royal Wedding. Thanks to social media we were able to experience this event like never before. Whether you watched the trends on Twitter and Facebook or saw it live streamed on the Internet you could follow the details and see the event roll out in an entirely new way.

In other news this week, Frito-Lay set a Guinness record for the most Facebook likes, Porsche decided to thank their Facebook fans and Mabel’s  Labels launched the first ever non-contest.

QR codes have become the hottest new trend for brands. Thrown into advertisements, events and promotional materials brands are able to share more information with their consumers in less space. Because QR codes are a new technology they can be a little tricky to understand. Here is a great article breaking down the basics of QR codes.

A few weeks ago Mashable launched a series teaching PR pros how to master the most popular social sites. Understanding these platforms is becoming an essential skill for all PR pros and these great articles explain how to do so in an easy to follow format. Now you can master Twitter, YouTube and blogging.

And We Have A (Career Reboot) Winner!

April 1st, 2011 | Posted By Cassie Boorn

Three weeks ago we were inspired to create the DeVries PR “Career Reboot” program in order to help cultivate talent and support the positive momentum that we’re seeing in the industry. The Career Reboot asked people to be their own best publicist and tell us why they deserved a day of career coaching with the senior executive team at DVPR.  We received terrific, well-written and compelling entries from a number of folks, each extraordinary in their own way. Thanks again to everyone who entered and shared their stories with us.

Last week we chose five finalists and put you in charge of voting to choose the winner via a poll on the DeVries Facebook page.   We were blown away at the number of people who came by to read the finalists’ stories and vote for the person they felt was most deserving.

Now, to announce our official DeVries Career Reboot Winner:

Congratulations to Elisa Freese!

Elisa’s story resonated with many people – she’s a talented, passionate PR practitioner, studying for a graduate degree, yet her career hasn’t taken off the way she envisioned.  She’s definitely working hard to build a foundation for her future, and we are thrilled to get a chance to meet with Elisa to help her re-boot her career.

Thank you to our amazing five finalists:  Elisa, Susan Borst, Shannon Harms, Tatiana Richards, and Andrew O’Hearn; and everyone who voted and supported the Career Reboot program.  Come back to visit the DeVries blog often – we are considering another Career Reboot round in the fall.

The DeVries Career Reboot Competition Finalists.

March 24th, 2011 | Posted By Cassie Boorn

We asked: “Anyone need a ‘career reboot’?” and the answer was a resounding yes!

The past two weeks have shown that people from diverse backgrounds and experiences share a common need: To feel energized and reinvigorated in their careers.

Thanks to everyone who entered and to all those who tweeted, re-tweeted and helped spread the word about the Career Reboot competition. We were amazed by the amount of support that we received!

Often online competitions receive a large amount of spam or quickly thrown-together entries. I can honestly say that all entries were well thought out and beautifully articulated.  Every story was interesting and worthy of finalist selection.

As challenging as it was, the Reboot Committee has culled the list down to five deserving finalists.  Here they are (in alphabetical order), along with their personal stories in their own words:

    Susan Borst:
“In a career with dynamic agencies, respected Clients, diverse/challenging brands and great people, I shifted from Account Management to Strategic Planning…perfect for an intellectually curious thinker. When laid off, I really wanted to shift to social media strategy. But to potential social media employers my resume screamed traditional media and that meant being a dinosaur. It was time to refocus 100% on social media to become a truly viable candidate. I’ve shared, learned and engaged via blogs, Twitter, webinars and networking. I have growing influence on the topic of “social media.” (klout.) I have even landed a social media consulting gig and evaluated social media monitoring tools, identified corporate recruiting social media best practices and analyzed global government social media and citizen journalism. Even though I can now support the claim of knowing more than most people about social media…and can legitimately call myself an experienced “social media strategist,” the problem is that I am a stuck. I’m see as “too senior” and “too expensive.” I’m doing many things “right”, but need help getting unstuck. My resume needs enhancement. I need jolts of “fearless motivation.” A DevriesPR Career Reboot could help achieve my 2011 career goal that could very well land me at a PR agency.”
    Elisa Freese :
“It may seem crazy that at 24 I need a career reboot, but I seriously do. I’ve experienced being laid off (twice) and unemployment checks all within a year of graduating college. The only work that’s come my way thus far has been administrative, which has taught me a lot, but it’s not what I want to be doing in the long run. My passion lies in the public relations field and I have no intention of giving that up. However, having no public relations experience beyond my education puts me at a great disadvantage. I’ve heard so many people tell me I need internship experience if I ever want to get a job in the field. How am I supposed to leave my full-time job for an internship? Receiving this career reboot would allow me to leverage the experience I do have and apply it to the public relations field. It’s really disheartening to hear how I’ll get nowhere with my current resume when I’ve worked so hard up to this point. What I need most at this stage in my career is to learn how to be my own best publicist to prove my dedication to the field.”
    Shannon Harms:
“Have a Hotmail account? Or Messenger? When you sign in to your account on Windows Live, I own all of the text you see on the screen. Ever reset your password? I own that too. I actually have a pretty sweet job at Microsoft–I’m a blogger and UI writer in Windows, and until now, “reboot” is what I do after I install an update on my PC. Millions of customers around the world see my writing every day (cool!), but I don’t have the chance to personally interact with them. It’s time to get out from behind my computer and start connecting with customers. I want to tell a story, change people’s minds, and experience that moment when customers light up because I’ve made them believe. It might even make sense to try another industry such as Fashion or Entertainment.”
    Andrew O’Hearn:
“Over 27 years, my PR career has morphed into the “blue screen of death.” Writing for local newspapers at age 15, and the #1 college newspaper by 19, I won an intern scholarship at Penn State and graduated summa cum laude. In the midst of the last major recession (1983), I joined Prentice Hall as a copywriter, then helped a major utility grow through acquisition to eight times its previous size. 1990 marked another economic downturn, but undaunted, I wrote marketing proposals that won major contracts and several awards. When the internet took off in 1995, I helped an old-line insurance company launch the first U.S. commercial insurance website, while completing my master’s in communications at night. With 2001 came the dot-com crash, and I shifted gears, working to help turn around a major engineering company on the verge of bankruptcy, and then to help a major consumer-goods company bring two disparate cultures together. The wheels came off in 2006, as gigs with a mid-market financial services firm, an international shipping giant, and a drug-development services company petered out over penury. I sought refuge in nonprofit, but the same scenario ensued. I’ve been spliced, diced, and liquidated like lice. REBOOT!”
    Tatiana Richards:
“Once upon a time, I wanted to be a journalist. Then, I got a job as a reporter: few holidays, stressed newsroom, a front row seat to other people’s misery. And the pay! The (in)famously meager restitution! So I changed things–my job, my career, my address. I moved from Alabama to Los Angeles and worked as an editorial assistant at a publishing company. It was a great environment, but it wasn’t work that I enjoyed. So when I was laid off in a round of cuts, I was honestly relieved. I spent three blissful months soaking up Southern California sun, traveling and writing fiction. Just as my severance pay was running out, I stumbled into a great opportunity as an associate editor at a city magazine that happened to be owned by a chamber of commerce. I’ve been able to get experience in editorial and advertising; now, I do a blend of both managing social media for the magazine and the chamber, and I love it. But while I’m good at managing my company’s brands, Tatiana Richards, Inc. is a mess! I need help packaging myself as a PR pro–I need a career reboot!”

Now it’s up to you to select the winner.  Show support for our final five “rebooters” and vote for the person you feel is most deserving.

Voting will be open on our Facebook Fan page until March 30th (one vote per person please). Click here and vote!

Each Friday we work hard to bring together the hottest topics in the world of PR, media, marketing, and pop culture. The best finds on the Web are contributed by different members of the agency and brought together to create a list of must-see topics. This week’s links were brought to you by Senior Account Executive Jessie DuPont and myself.

If you are spending anytime at all on Twitter you should know that this week was the annual SXSW conference in Austin Texas. Following this conference are posts laying out the hottest trends this year inspired by what they saw at SXSW. Mashable brought together a great collection of trends that will be important to every marketer in the coming year.

Our own Executive Vice President Rebecca Dickson had the chance to speak on a panel at SXSW. The panel, “Branded Documentary: A Case Study, Concept to Cannes,” was a discussion about how to develop and leverage documentary films as a means to spark consumer engagement and business results for brands and was attended by a mix of filmmakers, content creators and marketers.  Rebecca joined the film’s producer, a Downy Assistant Brand Manager and a digital media expert and moderator, Lisa Pearson (a DVPR alumna) on the panel; the Downy Touch of Comfort short film was utilized as a case study.

One of the most talked about new services that debuted at SXSW was this new focus on mobile gaming, specifically scavenger hunts. Brands are already jumping on this trend and finding ways to apply it to their marketing tactics. Neiman Marcus partnered with mobile app scvngr to create an in-store scavenger hunt.

The hardest part of attending large conferences such as SXSW is keeping track of your contacts and new people you meet. There isn’t much time for taking your business cards and organizing them in an effective way so that you can follow up later. This year a new application was released that made trading information and organizing contacts nearly seamless. Hashable allows you to meet new people and keep track of their social networks in a simple one step move.

We have seen online video content grow in popularity over the past few years. With the ability to watch online video on computers, smart phones, and tablet devices the act of consuming video content is nearly seamless and can be a powerful tool for brands. As we saw with Smart Waters viral video tactic their short YouTube film garnered over 7 million views. Tech Crunch released an interesting article sharing some statistics about online video watching habits. Also, Fast Company brought together a list of the 10 most innovative video companies.

The DeVries Career Reboot Competition will be ending this Sunday. Make sure and submit your career story and resume for a chance to win a trip to New York and a day in the DeVries office learning from top executives! Also, follow #DVPRreboot on Twitter for career articles, advice and tips!

The best finds on the Web are contributed by different members of the agency and brought together to create a list of must-see topics. This weeks links were brought to you by President Stephanie Smirnov, Managing Director Meryl Cooper and myself. Here’s what’s on our radar this week.

So many marketers are struggling to figure out how to navigate the digital space that they are beginning to turn to younger generations. The idea of reverse mentorship has become quite popular over the past year. Sometimes you are able to see technology in a new light when you talk to someone from a different generation. Some brands are now partnering with colleges for social media outreach.

LinkedIn has always been a great tool for professionals. The online network helps connect professionals with each other, share job openings and create groups with shared interests. This week Linked-In made an announcement that it would be entering the content sharing business. You can now follow topics of interest and Linked-In curates the articles that were most popular in those categories. LinkedIn has officially made figuring out what people are talking about a whole lot easier.

Charlie Sheen has been one of the hottest topics on the web this week. After he broke the world record for gaining the most Twitter followers and hosted a sponsored ad for Internships.com the discussion of influence once again ignited. Do we simply rely on numbers or is there another way to look at the influence a person has?

There are millions of great ideas floating around the Web. It is hard to keep track of who is doing what and what is working and what isn’t. Sometimes the best inspiration come from seeing what other people did that was successful. Inc has put together a list of the 10 most unique marketing events and Mashable has collected some really interesting mobile campaigns. Also, American Red Cross is doing some really interesting work on their Facebook fan page and Chevrolet did something fun with Play-doh!

Make sure and check out the Career Reboot Competition that we launched this week!

DVPR Career Reboot Competition

March 9th, 2011 | Posted By Stephanie Smirnov

Here at DeVries, we’re starting to feel spring awakening. Finally, the economy is on the upswing. Even better: PR is poised to be one of the fastest growing industries through 2018.  Yet, as anyone will tell you, an economic upswing doesn’t eliminate the need to find a way to stand out from the competition, whether you’re looking for a new job or to get noticed at your current one.

A deep commitment to collaboration and community runs through everything we do at DeVries.  Today, we are once again giving back to our community with the launch of the DeVries PR “Career Reboot” (#DVPRreboot), a month-long competition designed to help revamp the professional persona and pump up the prowess of one lucky PR professional. The “Career Reboot” program is our way to help cultivate talent and support the positive momentum that we’re seeing in the industry.

We were inspired to create this program by our own Managing Director Meryl Weinsaft Cooper, co-author of Be Your Own Best Publicist, the recently released book about leveraging PR skills to get hired and rewarded at work.  The “Career Reboot” will offer one lucky PR person with a career “makeover” guided by some of the agency’s top executives.  This full-day coaching session will include tips on acing an interview, networking successfully, revamping a resume, developing a strong social media profile as well as other skills needed to succeed in today’s crowded marketplace.

The competition is open to continental U.S.-based professionals with at least two years of professional work experience, currently in or looking to transition to the field of Public Relations.

Want to enter*?

Email reboot(at)devries-pr.com before March 20th with:

•          A 200-word career story: “Why I need/want a career reboot”
•          Your current resume with two (2) professional references
•          Links to social media profile (at least one)

A panel of PR executives will review and evaluate all entries.  Five finalists will be selected based on the most compelling entries, which will then be posted on the DeVries Facebook fan page on March 22.  Page visitors will have until March 28th to vote for their favorite, most deserving entrant.

The person who receives the most votes will receive:

•          Transportation to/from New York
•          A one-night stay in a hotel
•          A full-day coaching session at the DeVries offices
•          Lunch with senior DVPR executives

Results will be announced on March 30th.

Watch this blog, or our Facebook and Twitter (#DVPRreboot) accounts for more details, and click here for official program rules.

Good luck!

* IMPORTANT NOTE:  By making a Submission, you understand that your career story may be posted online if you are selected as a finalist, in accordance with the Terms & Conditions.

The death of the press release is probably the most popular conversation among PR professionals today. This week a great article was released that outlines the top seven gripes about press releases. The press release certainly isn’t dying but it definitely is changing!

Branded content is one of the hottest topics on the web right now. This great article shares some of the best practices of brand storytelling with some great insights on why it is important. Brands first began creating their own content on Facebook and Twitter and now brands are finding new outlets one of the most popular being Instagram.

DeVries is very familiar with the idea of creating branded content to make an impact. Next week our Executive Vice President Rebecca Dickson will be presenting the idea of branded documentaries on a panel at SXSW. If you are going to be at the conference make sure to stop in and say hello!

Some of the biggest news this week was Facebook’s acquisition of a group texting start-up. Group texting is still a rather new space to explore and Facebook’s interest in this technology makes you wonder where it might lead.

Each Friday we work hard to bring together the hottest topics in the world of PR, media, marketing, and pop culture. The best finds on the Web are contributed by different members of the agency and brought together to create a list of must-see topics. Here’s what’s on our radar this week.

In the past decade we have seen the definition of media go under some major changes. There have been long debates about the future of journalism and social media. With all of the changes that we have seen we can’t help but wonder what will be next?

As we all know social media can be useful, fun, and sometimes even addicting. It can be exciting when the number of followers you have starts to grow and there is nothing better than seeing a lot of comments on a new post. Sometimes this excitement can go a little too far. Are you committing the 7 deadly sins of a social brand?

A brand creating their own content is one of the hot new trends. When roles change from helping other people tell your story and telling your own story, tactics change as well. Ad Age outlines some major concerns that brands should have when creating their own content. Which once again brings us to the question of who owns social media?

There are tons of case studies about how brands have used social media successfully. Detailing their objectives, tactics, and results. Many of these studies were incredibly successful and there is plenty to learn from them. However, I don’t think that anyone can argue that there is even more we could learn from Justin Bieber.

Every week new technology is created and introduced to the social web and existing social platforms continue to change. This week Tumblr release a new feature that allows Tumblr users to curate content.
