Lessons Learned by Our Career Reboot Winner.

June 15th, 2011 | Posted By Cassie Boorn

Below is a guest post from our Career Reboot Winner Elisa Freese.

When I set foot into the DeVries office on the morning of the Career Reboot, I knew I was in for a long yet informative and exciting day and I was not disappointed. Having had my share of career setbacks, I went into the Career Reboot day as a sponge looking to soak up any and all information I heard.

Here’s just a small picture of what I learned during my Career Reboot:

·     Interviewing – Make sure to go into an interview prepared.

This seems pretty obvious, but for someone who hasn’t interviewed in a while it was refreshing to hear what a public relations firm looked for in an interviewee. Do your homework on the organization you’re interviewing with and exude confidence, not cockiness.  Also, make sure you have questions to ask the interviewer – show your interest!

·    Presentation Skills – Get rid of nervousness before a presentation by reflecting on a previous successful moment in your career.

As someone who tends to get nervous before presentations, I immediately asked for any tips to combat nervousness. What I learned was to just think back on a previous moment when you were successful. Once you get that image in your mind, take a deep breath and you’ll be more relaxed.

·   Your Signature – Think about what you want to be known for: both personally and professionally.

It was intriguing to sit down and just think of what I want to be known for in the future. Create a pie chart/list of all your attributes to paint a complete picture of yourself as a person and a professional. This can help mold your path in life.

·     Social Media – Maintain a presence on social media; it will get your name out there if done well.

As a member of the first college freshman class to enjoy Facebook in 2004, I’m a pretty big fan of social media and social networking sites. Social media can be helpful to not only maintain personal relationships, but also create and maintain professional relationships. Use your social media knowledge to network with like-minded individuals and show your passion for your field.

·     Networking – Do it!

There are plenty of people out there that want to help you, so why not take advantage of it? Make an effort to attend networking events because you never know who you’ll meet. I found out about the Career Reboot through someone I met at a networking event. She sent me a tweet because she thought I would be interested.  Awesome right? So a big thank you goes to Valerie Simon for referring me to the contest.

A HUGE thank you goes to everyone at DeVries who took the time out of their day to help a future PR professional reboot her career. This was an amazing opportunity and one that came at the perfect time. I will definitely reflect back on this day as I start my journey toward my PR career. THANK YOU!

Summer Service Day

August 4th, 2010 | Posted By Cassie Boorn

The agency’s second Summer Service Day was a huge success!
DeVries staffers participated in various community projects including table games and lunch with seniors in Brooklyn, mural painting at P.S./M.S. 140, Literacy & Crafts and Snactivities with kids at the Hudson Guild in Chelsea. Following the activities, everyone gathered at Sutton Place, where stories of the day were shared over drinks and appetizers. “The day spent at Cobble Hill Health Center not only encouraged the residents, but also reminded me that people of all ages need and appreciate contact with others. Even if it’s time spent while playing a board game or conversations about life, everyone can benefit from spending time with each other. I also think that our team leader Shana Claudio single-handedly brightened up everyone’s day! She did an amazing job and I was honored to be on her team”, said Marcy Alexis. “My experience at Hudson Guild was truly rewarding. The children were fantastic and the volunteers were so incredibly grateful to have the DeVries staff on-hand for the day”, said Lisa Sepulveda. “I loved the camaraderie and satisfaction I felt after my first DVPR Summer Service Day. It was a great way to get to know other colleagues and hope the mural puts a smile on the kids’ faces when they return to school!”, said Deepa Khetan.

DeVries Summer Service Day 2009

August 5th, 2009 | Posted By DeVries Archive

The agency’s first Summer Service Day was a huge success!  DeVries staffers participated in various community projects including table games and lunch with seniors in Brooklyn, socializing with cats and walking dogs in Harlem, scavenger hunts through the Museum of Natural History and Central Park, and mural painting at the Future Leaders Institute Charter School.  Following the activities, everyone gathered at The Wharf, where stories of the day were shared over drinks and appetizers. ”It was amazing to see white canvases come to life through the talent and creativity of those who participated.  Because of our efforts children will have a fun, beautifully decorated library to enjoy during school and after-school programs”, said Katelyn O’Rourke. “Yesterday’s DeVries service day solidified the fact that we are all blessed to work in a place that encourages us to give back to the community.  I participated in the Cobble Hill Senior Center activity and had a wonderful morning!  Between playing checkers with Josephine and having lunch with Charlie (Cobble Hill’s self-proclaimed DJ), my experience couldn’t have been better!  I will definitely be back to visit with Charlie and get another lesson on music from the 60s”, said Shana Claudio. “The scavenger hunt through Central Park with the kids was really fun!  Exploring the park and watching the kids’ excitement when we found the landmark we were searching for was genuinely rewarding and I think we all bonded with each other throughout the day.  I can’t wait to volunteer for more projects with NY Cares”, said Katie Bestelnehner. “I’ve been to the Museum many times, but it was great to be able to see it through the eyes of a teenager again.  I think the highlight of the day was the scavenger hunt.  It was fun to watch the kids get so excited about it!”, said Jillian Kwolek.

DeVries Public Relations – Consumer Agency of the Year

DeVries - Consumer Agency of the Year

Here’s my opportunity to be mushy and, for once, not self-effacing.

I love this agency. And we deserve the public recognition of being named “Consumer Agency of the Year.”

I have worked in agencies all over the world…big and small….start-ups and firmly established….wildly successful and turn-arounds.

This is the best professional experience of my long life.

There is no finer, hard-working or smarter group of people around than the 125 people who are here.

They have brains and heart. Big, big, hearts.

We do great work and deliver amazing results.

We have fun and live Manhattan to the fullest.

I come to work proud and happy every day.

The DeVries Boomerang Club?

August 28th, 2007 | Posted By DeVries Archive

DeVries enjoys a lot of distinctions and one of them is so terrific we even have a name for it – - the Boomerang Club. No, we aren’t throwing things at each other. The members of this club are employees who worked here, left for another position, and then came back. In fact, over six percent of our staff is made up of Boomerangers. In an agency our size, that’s a real statement.

I talked with some recent returnees to get a better understanding of this dynamic. For starters, why did they leave in the first place? Uniformly, they wanted something that DeVries couldn’t provide, such as getting in-house experience, learning the editorial side better and having a “large agency” experience. None of them left because of dissatisfaction. We probably won’t be seeing any of the disgruntled return.
